2011 Murray McPherson Mathematics Award Winners: Joanne Barre and Dennis Kasian

This year's recipient for the 2011 Early Years Murray McPherson Award is Joanne Barre, and Grade 1/2 teacher at Samuel Burland School in the Louis Riel School Division. At the school level, Joanne leads her math team with vision and direction, welcoming new ideas and offering a strong philosophical base in mathematics instruction and assessment. Divisionally, Joanne got involved in welcoming teachers into her classroom to model strategies and even hosted Trevor Calkins one day to model 10 frames to her students and 50 divisional teachers. Provincially, Joanne has been on several Manitoba Education committees for curriculum development as well as writing support documents at her grade level.

At the MAMT Awards Dinner, Dennis Kasian was presented with the 2011 Senior Years Murray McPherson award for his contribution to the teaching of mathematics. Dennis has been a teacher at River East Collegiate for more than 30 years. He has been the Department Head for more than 10 years. He has been actively involved in curriculum development for the last two major revisions in the provincial math curriculum. In the last round, he was a pilot teacher implementing the new curriculum ahead of schedule and the helping to train others. Dennis excels at bringing out the best in students. He accomplishes this with a caring, welcoming and easy-going demeanor. Many students come back to speak to Dennis after graduation to tell him of the positive influence he has been in their lives.

Congratulations to Joanne and Dennis!
